Mount Elgon,
Shield volcano in Uganda

Mount Elgon,
Shield volcano in Uganda

About this project.

The Mount Elgon and Busia regions of Uganda are home to approximately 4,000 farmers who rely mainly on coffee and banana cultivation. Unfortunately, the intensive monoculture farming of these crops has caused negative effects such as soil erosion, flooding, and mudslides, which threaten the local community. Agroforestry practices have become a promising solution to these challenges.

By incorporating agroforestry practices such as planting deep-rooted multipurpose trees and intercropping with nitrogen-fixing crops, farmers can stabilize soils, prevent mudslides, and improve yields. Additionally, agroforestry can enhance food security and income, create synergies between crops, and prepare farmers for the impacts of climate change.

These practices are part of a broader shift towards more sustainable and diversified farming systems that can improve the resilience of farmers in the face of climate change and market volatility. To address these challenges, it is essential to support farmers through training, technical assistance, and financial resources. Farmers in Mount Elgon have already started to reverse these negative impacts and restore their land by planting live fences/green walls around their fields and alley cropping with nitrogen-fixing species.

Location

Mount Elgon, Uganda

Project Type

Planting deep-rooted multipurpose agroforestry trees, fruit trees, and other vegetables stabilizes the soil and trains farmers in sustainable agroforestry practices.

Environmental Benefits

Each project is carefully vetted to make sure they reduce carbon, restore wildlife and support local communities.

Mount Elgon, Uganda

The Mount Elgon region has the highest occurrence of landslides and floods in the country, caused by climate change. Our project trains farmers on sustainable agroforestry to transform degraded land into diverse systems, increasing resilience and productivity. We also support reforestation efforts and aim to create thriving communities and a healthier planet through sustainable land use.

Madagascar Carbonoffsetcompany

Madagascar

Madagascar is a nation with over 200,000 species of plants and animals that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. But more than 90% of original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and taking away the Malagasy’s ability to farm and live on the land.

Haiti

Haiti is the world’s 3rd hungriest country, and only 2% of the country’s original forests remain.
