Cofre de Perote,
Veracruz, Mexico

About this project.

The project proposes to plant trees of local species for three consecutive years in the regions of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, in the central mountainous region.

In the central mountainous region, temperate forest species produced in nurseries will be planted. Only species native to local forests (Pinus) will be used. Several species of pine will be planted, balancing between species of high commercial interest (Pinus patula) and other species that are also local but of lesser commercial interest (Pinus teocote, Pinus patula, Pinus montezumae, and Pinus pseudostrobus).

The trees will be produced in nurseries belonging to local peasant communities and the Veracruz government.

About Veracruz

The sites to be reforested in Cofre de Perote are located in the National Park, a federally protected natural area, part of the La Antigua River, that provides important environmental services to the central region of Veracruz like regulation of climate, hydrology, biodiversity, and landscape. One million inhabitants depend on this area for their water supply. Reforestation is essential in this area to prevent disasters, like landslides and the abrupt growth of rivers, as happened with Hurricane Karl.

Madagascar

Madagascar is a nation with over 200,000 species of plants and animals that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. But more than 90% of original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and taking away the Malagasy’s ability to farm and live on the land.

Haiti

Haiti is the world’s 3rd hungriest country, and only 2% of the country’s original forests remain.
