About this project.

In this project we are planting 500,000 trees inside the Monarch Butterfly Reserve inside the state of Michoacan, with a total extension of 500 hectares (Planting density of 1,000 trees per hectare). The trees selected are native species beneficial to the Monarch Butterfly grown in local nurseries, transported to the planting sites, and planted by local communities (the people will be financially compensated for their work by Nacion Verde) during the rainy season (June to August) to ensure that they have enough water for establishment.

Aside from the planting of the right species in the right place during the right time, we also implement advanced reforestation methods; we arrange dead material in curve level across all the planting sites to mitigate laminar erosion, provide living spaces to wildlife, and try to reduce the damage generated by potential wildfires.

Project Type

Communities and landowners will be taught sustainable forestry practices such as proper planting techniques, sustainable harvesting, and plant protection. This will create jobs and opportunities.

Environmental Benefits

Each project is carefully vetted to make sure they reduce carbon, restore wildlife and support local communities.

About Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

This project focuses on both farmland conversion and forest restoration to improve biodiversity habitats in an essential migration corridor for numerous species, most notably the Monarch butterfly. By densely planting native species with the cooperation of local landowners and indigenous communities, we can make sure that the monarch butterfly ecosystems in Michoacán and the State of Mexico's natural beauty are restored for future generations of people and wildlife.

Madagascar

Madagascar is a nation with over 200,000 species of plants and animals that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. But more than 90% of original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and taking away the Malagasy’s ability to farm and live on the land.

Haiti

Haiti is the world’s 3rd hungriest country, and only 2% of the country’s original forests remain.
